Complicated Complexes: Housing at Disney
Housing information at Disney.
Disney College Program (DCP) is such an amazing experience and I highly recommend anyone and everyone do it! So here is some information on the housing complexes that might be useful.
Please be aware that this information is from my knowledge of the DCP complexes from Jan 2018-Jan 2019. I know a new housing complex is being built and things are changing around, however, I'm sure this information will still come in useful!
One thing to note beforehand is that you will always share a room with someone else. Houses with 3 - 6 occupancy will usually have between 1 and 3 rooms with double or triple occupancy per room. this means single beds for you and your roommate or bunk beds for those lucky enough to have 3 people to a room.
So to start with there are four housing complexes, The Commons, Chatham Square, Patterson Square and Vista Way. These are all connected by bus or some are close enough to walk between as well!
The Commons
The Commons is the most expensive of the four and has apartments with 3 or 6 occupancies in each house. This is also the only apartment complex that has washers and dryers inside the apartment. This is definitely a plus because in every other apartment you have to pay for washing at the laundry mats on the property. The commons is also the closest in walking distance to the outlets. In terms of the bus route, Some buses will stop at The Commons, however, after a certain time (around 6pm) a bus must be requested to stop at there. The Commons is around a 10-minute walk from Chatham Square. This complex also has a convenience store located on site that is open 12-6pm daily for emergency food runs, however, it is only a 30-minute walk to Publix and Walgreens.
Chatham Square
I am very biased because this was my home complex my entire program. Chatham is located in the middle of Patterson Court and The Commons. It has the bus stop right outside the gates so it is easy to get to and all the busses stop there. It is the main bus hub for The Commons, Patterson Court and Chatham Square. Chatham is also where all the major housing events like the welcome party, services celebration and holiday-themed nights are held. Chatham houses can be 2-8 people living in 1. The laundry mats are usually located within 3-4 houses from each other and are located inside a building. This complex is around a 20-minute walk to Publix and Walgreen.
Patterson Court
I had a lot of friends who lived in Patterson Court so most of my information about this complex comes from them. This complex has a living occupancy of 3-6 people. Its laundry mats are similar to that found in Chatham Square. A downside to living in Patterson is it had very limited buses, at the time I did DCP there was only 1 bus that stopped there and that was the Walmart bus. However, it is only a 5-minute walk to Chatham Squares main bus hub. Even though this complex doesn't have buses, it is the newer of the housing complex so the apartments and kitchen are a lot nicer than some of the others. Once again is it only a 20-minute walk to Publix and Walgreen.
Vista Way
The last complex that DCP has to offer is Vista Way. This Complex has a reputation, it is the furthest away from the other complexes and is known as 'Vista Lay' to some. Vista Way has an occupancy of 3-6 people because it is on its own it also has a bus hub where all the buses stop at. The Washers and Dryers are located on the bottom floor of each building, There is around 3 of each in each building and if you are lucky enough you might even get a room next door to the machines and be able to simple look outside to see if your laundy is done! Vista Way is a accross the street from a Walgreens, however, it is a bus ride away if you want to go to Publix. The best part about Vista Way, other than it being the cheapest of the 4 complexes, is that it is a 5 minute walk to Chick-fil-a or Wendys!
Overall
Each complex has its ups and downs, internationals tend to get put in Chatham Square or Vista Way becasue of the busses as this is the only way for us to get around, some Americans choose to bring their cars to DCP making it easier for them to get around places.
In terms of what you will need for your house, Basic things are provided, silverware, basic pots and pans table, chairs, a sofa, a bed, a coffee table and a microwave. Everything else will need to be bought yourself. This includes your own bedding, kettle, knives, and utensils. In my house some of the use bought lamps for our rooms, we also bought extra pots and oven trays because we only had 1 of each provided. Sometimes you will be lucky enough to get some leftover items from the old occupants, I know I left a ton of stuff in the cupboards for the new group to use.
So Which One Should You Pick?
Whilst you can't guarantee you will get you first pick of housing complex (mine was The Commons and I got Chatham Square) Its best to weight up your options and figure out what is best for you. When you get to choose a housing complex it will ask what comnplex and how many people you would prefer to live with. at this time it will also ask to link up with someone. This part is optional. You can always choose to go random for both housing and roommates. I think its always a little more fun if you go random for roommates but you feel uncomfortable with that you can link up with people using one of the many Facebook groups dedicated to that years DCP intake. In the end, whatever you get will most likely become your favourite complex. and if you really hate where you live you have the option to move complexes when you extend.
I hope this was helpful! If you have any questions about anything DCP related leave a comment and id be happy to help you out!
